Why I'm Launching a Coaching Practice

Why I'm Launching a Coaching Practice by Emily Pik // Career coaching for young professionals, quarter lifers, and recent grads. In a life transition or looking for leadership development? I can help!

I’m going to cut straight to the chase: I’ve personally navigated a handful of life milestones that I felt utterly unprepared for.

Assimilating to the working world after college. Finding my identity at my first company. Finding my identity at my second company. Navigating being a new manager.

Splitting time across my friend groups and relationships. Questioning how to move through life and career changes at different stages than my friends. Personal finances—what are these outside of paying my credit card bill?

Feeling in a state of comparison. What are these feelings I’ve attached to the aesthetics of my life—be it my belongings, my social life, my hobbies or my social media? How does my outer world compare to the feelings behind my feelings, the feelings in my headspace?

These are not traditional milestones that we’re raised to understand. Yet, it’s normal to have these questions. And I was learning from my experiences, from my failures and from my triumphs—but I felt silly for feeling dissatisfied.

As a rower in high school and college, I was able to lean on my coaches. They understood the details of my personal, academic, and athletic life. My priorities were their priorities. If I wasn’t feeling successful in my classes, excited about my social life, and empowered by friends, family, and teammates, they knew I was not going to perform well.

How could I find this person in the real world?

After about two years in New York, despite the love and support from my community, I sought personalized and dedicated guidance. My parents were always available but there weren’t enough hours in the day for me to explain the characters in real life versus the narrative in my head. I felt confused and fearful. And then to compound the issue, I felt guilty and ungrateful for admitting to these feelings.

I was desperate to find this person and get them up to speed on my inner monologue. I needed them to push me through this uncertainty and dissatisfaction and get me to the other side. Where was my coach?

The answer to this problem for me was not just one person—it was many.

It was the support of a therapist and a coach who helped extract the best next steps out of my busy mind. It was expanding my reading and listening to new authors and podcasts. It was talking about what I had learned with my community. It continued through managing teams in my workplace. And through being social in a way that brought connection: gathering over conversation and homemade food.

And now, I'm here. I'm here to work with you as a career coach. To take my experience and help you find the confidence and structure you're looking for. I will help take you out of your busy mind and into your own best next step.

My coaching focuses on where you are at today and where you want to be. Through examining your vision for the next week, next month, and next year, we will find the next step in your epic career and life. We will work on the tactical and practical, as well as the feelings and mindsets, that go along with any career and life decision.

If my story resonates with you and you’re not sure where to begin with that next step—let’s work together.
